GENGHIS LINYANTI SAVUTI MOREMI
|
Historically, the Somali has
had to fight prejudice and vested interest to establish itself as a
recognised breed. The result of a recessive Abyssinian gene, Somali kittens
from Abyssinian parents were often given away or even destroyed by breeders
who refused to acknowledge the long-haired progeny. It is the Somali's ticked coat that gives it a wildcat appearance. Each individual strand of a Somali coat has bands of colour all along its length - at least 4, up to 20. The bands constitute alternate lines of base coat and a ticking colour. Base colours are traditionally ruddy, cinnamon, blue or fawn. However, if the base colour is genetically inhibited, the coat appears silvery white with black, cinnamon, blue or fawn as the ticking colour. Moremi has proven himself a lithe and formidable hunter - like his bigger cousins in the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, Botswana. Whenever a delicacy hits the ground, for which he is always on the prowl, Moremi is there in a flash! While the neurons in Savuti and Linyanti's brains may still be crackling the message to eager muscles, Moremi will already be snacking on the tidbit... He is a loveable boy, and unlike other cats who rub their cheeks against a human for affection, he goes the extra yard by rubbing his entire body against you!
