GENGHIS LINYANTI SAVUTI MOREMI

April Fool's Day would have
been a justified birth date for this loveable dopey Newfoundland, but
Genghis was actually born on April 10, 2000. Fathered by the impressive Australian champion Waterbear Boston, the little black ball of fluff, with a coloured string attached to his leg to distinguish him from brothers and sisters, immediately captured the heart. It is probable that the Newfoundland descends from inter-breeding between native Indian and visiting Viking dogs. The skeletons of giant dogs dating from the 5th century have been found in Indian gravesites in Newfoundland. There is also a legend that when Leif Erikson discovered North America about 1000AD, he had aboard his boat a large black dog resembling a Newfoudland, called Oolum. This original stock may have been supplemented by Pyrenean Mountain Dogs who sailed with Scandinavian fishermen and explorers to the New World. One of only two breeds with webbed feet, the Newfoundland adores water. When deprived of a pool, the Newf has no qualms about dipping into his water bowl or even the toilet - sometimes feet first! In Ancient times, the Newfoundland often had to rely on their own skills to obtain a meal. From the diary of seaman Aaron Thomas, 25 May 1794: Bitter hunger is their monitor and as it presses upon them they go to the waterside and set on a rock, keeping as good a lookout as a cat ever did for a mouse. The instant a fish appears they plunge into the water and seldom come up without their prey. Genghis, typical of the breed, is a loveable, huggable bear. Very dependent on human companionship, he is extremely obedient. Despite his dark coat and heavy body, Genghis is a natural athlete and loves to run. While only barking in extreme circumstances, the Newfoundland is tolerant and sweet tempered. Genghis likes nothing more than to cavort in parks with fashion dogs no larger than his front paw.
However, his great love remains his family, including
Isus, Linyanti and
Moremi who likes to try and lord it over him,
and Savuti, who tries to climb into his ear. |
